{Synopsis} – Just in time for baseball season!
Babe Ruth came from a poor Baltimore family and, as a kid, he was a handful. It was at a reform school that Babe discovered his talent for baseball, and by the age of nineteen, he was on his way to becoming a sports legend. Babe was often out of shape and even more often out on the town, but he had a big heart and an even bigger swing! Kids will learn all about the Home Run King in this rags-to- riches sports biography. With black-and-white illustrations throughout, a true sports legend is brought to life.
{My thoughts} – I really enjoyed reading this book. I am always interested in learning more about well-known individuals from our countries history. Baby Ruth is a baseball legend that nearly everyone has heard about at one point or another in their lives. Even more so those individuals that are baseball fans.
I learned a lot of interesting things about his history, upbringing and career that I hadn’t known before I’d read the book. It has always intrigued me how someone so important in baseball or any sport really can be so different from the person that the media portrays them as. I didn’t know a lot of what I’d read and although I can’t say it surprises me – It does make me sad to think that he chose to live his life in that manner. It also makes me sad to know that when he wasn’t doing things I don’t particularly approve of – that he had a heart of gold and was trying to help children and others feel better when they were going through rough times in terms of medical situations.
He all and all seemed to have been a good guy that could have made better choices, but he is mostly known for his ability to hit record breaking homeruns! I will choose to remember him as that character instead of the person that he chose to be when he wasn’t on the baseball field for the most part.
This could be an enjoyable read for anyone that is interested in learning more about baseball at the time that Babe Ruth had played and about Babe Ruth’s career in general. I look forward to sharing this book with my children.
Final Conclusion: 5 Star Rating.
