{The Girl who Never Was: Skylar Dorset}

{Synopsis} –This is not your average trip to Fairyland

In Selkie's family, you don't celebrate birthdays. You don't talk about birthdays. And you never, ever reveal your birth date.

On her seventeenth birthday, Selkie finally understands why. All she wanted was a simple “Happy Birthday” from her secret crush, Ben. But the instant she blurts out the truth to him in the middle of Boston Common, her whole world shatters. Because the Boston that Selkie knows is only an elaborate enchantment constructed to conceal the truth: Selkie is a half-faerie princess. And her mother wants her dead. The faerie court believes Selkie is a child of prophecy-fated to destroy the court's powerful grip on the supernatural world. And the only way for Selkie to survive…is to prove them right.

{My Thoughts } – This book was rather enjoyable. I liked that it wasn’t common when it came to the whole let’s tell an unusual tale.

Selkie Stewart of Boston is led to believe that she is just an ordinary seventeen year old girl that lives in Boston with her two Aunts True and Virtue. She has a best friend named Kelsey and a boy named Ben that seems to help her keep everything in her life together, without really trying in her eyes, he makes everything alright. In his eyes, her world would crash down before her if it weren’t for him.

One day she decides to go against everything her aunts have told her and she tells Ben her birth date. Once she does this everything changes. She then starts asking more and more questions about her mother and everyone tells her to stop asking questions. No one wants to tell her who her mother really is. She also goes on and on about how her life doesn’t make a lot of sense and how everyone around her seems to always talk in riddles. I can understand where she is coming from by wanting to know who her mother is, and by wanting people to be honest with her. That is human nature, you want people around you that you can trust. However, that isn’t the case for her, human nature, it is far from it…

“This is all insane. I cannot believe I’m sitting in my kitchen, next to the boy I’m in love with {faerie}, my aunts {ogres}, and the owner of a museum in Salem {wizard}. This has to be a dream, right? It must be a dream.” {The end of Chapter 9}

What she beings to learn is that she is not of the human world but of the Otherworld. A world where all sorts of creatures seem to live. The world where her mother lives and is looking for her and wants her back so she can kill her. It is a really well written story, it is full of adventure, it is fast going and it is wonderful on so many levels.

I really do hope that I can soon find out what happens to Selkie, and what happened to Ben and what becomes of her mother. I am not one that is fond of cliff hangers, so I am officially wanting to read book two like yesterday. {smiles}

Final Conclusion: 5 Star Rating.
