{Synopsis} – Samara Cavanaugh has grown up in a world filled with magic users. She’s used to bizarre and peculiar. But when a stranger checks in at The Bella Luna, the bed and breakfast her family owns, the strange occurrences in Granite Falls escalate.
Many people are leery of Levi, their new guest. He claims to be in town doing research but Samara’s friends aren’t so sure that his claim is as innocuous as it appears to be. When two of her classmates disappear, her friends seem convinced Levi had a hand in it.
Those closest to her have been keeping secrets from her. Those secrets put everyone close to her in danger.
Suddenly, her unrequited crush on her best friend, Tristan becomes the least of her troubles.
{My Thoughts} – Malice, such an interesting title for this book. Usually when I read a book, I have some inkling of how they author had come up with the title that they choose to use. In the case of this book, cover to cover I am unsure. However, title set aside, this book is incredibly enjoyable.
Samara Cavanaugh is a seventeen year-old girl with magic abilities. She has three close friends Finola, Tristan and Daphne. Her friends all have magical abilities too although Tristan’s seems to be the least evolved out of all of them. Most of this books setting takes place at the Bella Luna, Where Samara lives, her family owns and runs a Bread & Breakfast, and at the Rush a common Teen hangout, with occasional scenes in their high school.
I really liked how the author had those with magic blended in with those without magic like it was common and not strange at all. I liked that magic and non-magic people attended school together. I really think it helped to better shape the book into the wonderful writing that it had become.
Shortly after the book begins a guest named Levi checks into the Bread & Breakfast. He says he is there for research purposes and that he shouldn’t be there for more then a few weeks at the most. Everyone but Samara seems to get a bad vibe from him and he seems to make many people dislike him based on the research questions that he insists on asking people. However, Samara and her mom and little sister don’t seem to find anything wrong with him, so they just go about their days.
I think my two favorite characters in this book would be Tristan because he reminds me of myself, aside from the whole magic thing, he can do magic but its limited sort of thing. I love that he loves to read, that he’s only got one close friend, that he’s super smart and that he’s such a lovable character. I do admit to chuckling to some of his wardrobe choices though! I mean really how could I not? I Also loved Magnolia, Samara’s, little sister. She was just adorable and for being a six-year-old character the author had her attitude and speech and everything down pat. I could imagine my now seven year-old doing and saying many of the same things. Minus the magical stuff.
I will say that this book is full of surprises. I wasn’t expecting quite so many but, it was nicely written and the tale was well woven. I thoughoughly enjoyed reading it and I look forward to reading the next book in the series when it becomes available. It was an easy read, good page turner that I found difficult to set down, which at this point was a good things since I am sick in bed, but I loved it and I am sure you will too!
