{Synopsis} – I think about everything I’ll miss if they tell me I’m going to die . . . my mom, my dad, my sister, cookies, TV shows I’ll never get to see the end of, walking outside when it’s really nice, the smell of fall, the starry sky on a full moon, my grandparents, my grandpa’s lasagna, kissing Victor, Victor’s eyes, Victor’s voice, Victor’s smell, Victor’s hands . . . Victor.
A teenage girl heads towards the hospital waiting room where the doctors are going to tell her how much time she’s got to live. As she walks, she thinks about her journey up to this point . . . the terrible decor in the hospital, wearing a headscarf, the horrible treatments, but also being with her friends, family, and her new boyfriend Victor. This is a story about cancer with a happy ending. It’s about life, love, and especially, hope.
{My thoughts} – A nice little story to help teens better understand what it’s like to deal with cancer. This girl has been fighting for her life while going through treatments and she tells about some of the process. She tells how her she feels about how her parents and family and friends treat her. She talks about her close relationship with the girl she’d shared hospital rooms with on a regular basis. She talks about how she met a boy and fell and love. She talks about how gut wrenching it is to go to a doctors appointment waiting to see if its good or bad news.
I think this book is brilliant. I like how it is well put together. I like how the images help to add to the context and understanding of the text on each page. I really think that any middle grade/teenage child could benefit from reading this book. I think it has the potential to help them see what takes place in a way that their brain will have an easier time understanding.
Being sick with any illness as a child is hard for a child to wrap their head around. It’s not an easy situation, it’s not an easy fix. There is a process and this book helps to layout the process this teen went through in her road to trying to become cured.
Final Conclusion: 5 Star Rating.
